Disturbance, Chipeta Elementary, Chipeta Ave & N 10th St

Chipeta Elementary is on shelter-in-place due to a parent causing a disturbance in front of the school. Police have taken the suspect / parent into custody without incident. The suspect was involved in a felony menacing incident and domestic disturbance at their residence prior to traveling to the school. The suspect was locked out of the school due to the shelter-in-place.

The suspect possibly had a firearm, and previously held a gun to the head of a female victim at their residence prior to arriving at the school.

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – On April 15, 2025, at 3:15 p.m. Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriffโ€™s Office responded to a felony menacing incident on the 3000 block of Hill Court in Grand Junction, Colorado. 

The suspect, identified as Cameron Renteria (26) of Grand Junction, Colorado, left the initial incident address and was located at Chipeta Elementary a short time later. The school was placed into a precautionary lockdown.

Renteria was arrested without incident and Chipeta Elementary was released from the lockdown a short time later. Through their investigation, Deputies found that Renteria was unarmed and there was no threat to the school. 

Renteria was transported to the Mesa County Sheriffโ€™s Office for questioning and remanded into the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges:

  • Menacing-Real/Simulated Weapon, Felony 5
  • Assault 2nd Degree with Intent to Cause Bodily Injury by Strangulation, Felony 4
  • Child Abuse Injury – Non Serious Bodily Injury/Acts Knowingly/Recklessly, Misdemeanor 1
  • False Imprisonment, Misdemeanor 2
  • Assault in the Third Degree, Misdemeanor 1
  • Criminal Attempt, Felony 5
  • Domestic Violence
