On May 13, 2025, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to Alpine Bank, located at 2424 Patterson Road, for a report of a fraud in progress.

An adult Hispanic male, later identified as Martin Suarez-Estrada (46), attempted to cash a fraudulent check and left the bank upon being confronted. Officers determined Suarez-Estrada had outstanding warrants and was staying at the Woodspring Suites located at 659 Market Street.

Officers attempted to make contact with Suarez-Estrada who barricaded himself inside the room. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Suarez-Estradaโ€™s hotel room, and the Grand Junction Police Department SWAT Team was called in to assist. During the attempt to gain entry, Suarez-Estrada discharged a single round into the bed of the hotel room. Officers did not return fire, and no injuries were reported.

After several hours of negotiations, Suarez-Estrada surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.

He was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility and booked on the following charges:

  • Assault in the First Degree
