Arson Suspect Jailed in Vehicle Fire at Grand Manor Apts

From the Grand Junction Police Department:

On February 26, 2025, at approximately 11:10 p.m., officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle on fire in a parking lot located in the 2800 block of Orchard Avenue. There were no injuries as a result of this fire.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 31-year-old Ashanti Schmitt. An arrest warrant was written and issued for Schmitt.

On the morning of May 29, 2025, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department located and contacted Schmitt, who was taken into custody without incident. He was transported the Mesa County Detention Facility where he was booked in on the following charges:

  • Attempted 1st Degree Arson
  • 2nd Degree Arson
  • Criminal Mischief
  • Possession of Incendiary Parts
  • Domestic Violence

This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no additional information available.
