Mesa County, Colorado, is pursuing a $1.8 million Colorado Water Plan Grant to fund the 38 Road Bike and Pedestrian Project, following approval of a letter of support by the Board of County Commissioners on June 24. If awarded, the grant will support a multi-benefit initiative that includes piping the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District check channel and creating a bike and pedestrian path along 38 Road, connecting Palisade and East Orchard Mesa.

The project, with a total estimated cost of $5.97 million, aims to conserve water by replacing an aging open channel with two 96-inch pipes, enhancing efficiency for local agriculture and the Colorado River system. It will also improve safety by enabling a shared-use path over the pipes, offering a secure route for cyclists and pedestrians along the popular Fruit & Wine Byway, which links vineyards and businesses in the area.

Mesa County will provide a local match of $4.18 million, including a $1.88 million Federal Transportation Alternatives Program grant already secured. The Orchard Mesa Irrigation District is a key partner, contributing right-of-way and easements for the path. The county emphasizes the projectโ€™s importance for water conservation, recreational infrastructure, and community safety, urging favorable consideration from the Colorado Water Conservation Board.
