Mesa County, CO – Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, the Mesa County Sheriff and local Fire Chiefs have announced the implementation of Stage 2 Fire Restrictions across the county. This decision is based on critical factors such as vegetation moisture levels, weather forecasts, and human risk factors, amid ongoing dry conditions and high temperatures that have heightened fire dangers.

Under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, several activities are prohibited to prevent potential fire outbreaks. These include the use of open flames from wood-burning stoves, campfires, charcoal grills, and similar devices, even in developed areas or private residences. Other banned activities include driving or parking off established roads or trails unless in vegetation-free zones, using fireworks, smoking outside enclosed spaces or cleared areas, unpermitted debris burning, shooting tracer rounds or explosive targets, and welding without proper safety measures and equipment.

Exceptions are made for liquid-fueled or gas-fueled devices like grills and stoves with shut-off valves, provided they are used at least three feet from flammable materials. Gas fire pits with turn-off capabilities are also permitted, as are agricultural burns with a Sheriffโ€™s Office-issued permit.

Officials warn that a single spark can ignite a devastating fire under current conditions, citing risks such as dragging chains from vehicles, hot exhaust pipes in tall grass, and improperly discarded cigarettes. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to these restrictions to prevent fire incidents. For information on fire restrictions on federal lands, residents are advised to consult the Bureau of Land Management and United States Forest Service websites.
