Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) has announced a delay in the start of the fall burn season due to ongoing fire restrictions and hazardous weather conditions. Typically, the open burn season runs from September 1 to September 30 for Grand Junction residents and until October 31 for other Mesa County residents. However, a No Burn Advisory, in effect since June 19, 2025, and Stage Two Fire Restrictions issued by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office have necessitated the postponement. With dry, hot weather and at least 10 active wildfires in western Colorado, fire risks remain high across the region.
MCPH is monitoring conditions weekly and will notify the public through their website and social media when it is safe to burn. While burn permits can still be issued starting September 1, permit holders are prohibited from burning until the advisory is lifted.
For more information or to apply for a permit, contact MCPH at 970-248-6900 or visit the Burn Permits webpage.
