Police and fire crews are responding to a vehicle accident where a car was found upside down in the canal under the Horizon Drive bridge near Lakeside Drive.
The incident began when a 20-year-old female, soaked and wearing pajamas, appeared on the porch of a nearby home along the canal. She told residents the vehicle she was in crashed into the water and that a man was still trapped inside. The residents who called 911 reported the male appeared unresponsive.
Emergency crews arrived and located the car fully submerged, however, it’s unclear if the male occupant is in the vehicle or not. Horizon Drive has been closed between 7th and 12th Streets while authorities investigate.
After recovering the vehicle, authorities discovered a male occupant inside, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after notifying next of kin. A female passenger was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
