GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) is excited to introduce its newest K9 officers, Brisa and Loki, to the community. A special K9 Meet and Greet event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Sherwood Park (1301 E. Sherwood Drive). Officers Cory Swetnam and Cody Lopez, along with their K9 partners, completed a rigorous nine-week training program at the Rocky Mountain Canine Academy in Denver this summer, focusing on obedience, search techniques, and scent detection of controlled substances.

The GJPD K9 program, which began in 1988, was revived in late 2024 after a brief pause, thanks to generous donations from community members Ann Raabe and Paul DiMarchi. Their contributions enabled the department to onboard two new handlers and K9s. Chief Matt Smith emphasized the importance of the K9 teams in enhancing public safety by removing dangerous drugs from the streets. Since graduating, Brisa and Loki have already assisted in locating over 135 grams of illegal drugs and responded to more than 40 calls for service.

The community is invited to Sherwood Park to celebrate the return of the GJPD K9 program and meet these dedicated new team members.
