Investigation Underway Following Inmate Death

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Authorities are investigating an in-custody death after a female inmate was found unresponsive early Tuesday morning.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as 55-year-old Jean Treadwell of Parachute, Colorado. The incident occurred in the early hours of February 17, 2026, when Treadwell was discovered in her cell at the Mesa County jail. According to officials, deputies, medical staff, and emergency personnel immediately began life-saving measures. Despite their resuscitative efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The inmate’s next of kin has already been notified. According to a release from the Coroner’s Office on February 19, Treadwell’s autopsy is complete and showed no injuries that contributed to her death. Officials are currently awaiting the results of special studies before determining the final cause and manner of death.

The incident remains under active investigation.
