Suspect Nabbed in December Attempted Burglary

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a December attempted burglary at a local jewelry store, a case that ultimately led detectives to uncover nearly 20 pounds of marijuana in a home shared with a child.

The original incident occurred on the evening of December 29, 2025. At approximately 9:30 p.m., Grand Junction Police officers responded to a business alarm at Big J Jewelry & Loan, located at 136 S 7th Street. Arriving officers discovered what appeared to be a bullet hole in the front glass door. Surveillance footage showed an individual firing a gun into the door and attempting to kick it in before fleeing as the alarm sounded.

Following an extensive investigation, detectives identified Sage Bingham, 23, as the suspect. On Thursday, March 19, 2026, officers contacted Bingham in the 2800 block of Orchard Avenue and took him into custody.

During the execution of a subsequent search warrant at a residence, detectives discovered nearly 20 pounds of marijuana in a home where a child was also living.

Bingham was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility and booked on the following charges:

  • Attempted 2nd Degree Burglary of Building
  • Illegal Discharge of a Firearm
  • Unlawful Distribution/Manufacture/Possession with Intent >5 LBs but <50 LBs of Marijuana
  • Child Abuse – Knowingly/Reckless – No injury
  • Reckless Endangerment

The Grand Junction Police Department noted that the investigation remains ongoing. In light of the initial incident, the department is encouraging local business owners to enhance their security measures—such as installing cameras and other protective features—to deter criminal activity and safeguard their property.
