
GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Grand Junction police have arrested two drivers—a 21-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman—in connection with a fatal street racing crash that killed a pedestrian last December.
On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, authorities took both individuals into custody without incident following an extensive investigation into the deadly collision.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on December 11, 2025. According to the Grand Junction Police Department, a pedestrian was crossing within the crosswalk at the intersection of N 7th Street and Patterson Road when they were struck by a westbound vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that two drivers were actively racing on Patterson Road at the time, resulting in one of the vehicles fatally striking the pedestrian. Following these findings, police obtained arrest warrants for both individuals involved in the speed contest.
Both suspects were transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility and booked on the following charges:
Jacob Morton, 21:
- Vehicular Homicide (DUID)
- Vehicular Homicide (Reckless Driving)
- Engaging in a Speed Contest
- Reckless Driving
Kari Frederick, 54:
- Engaging in a Speed Contest
- Reckless Driving
Acknowledging the profound impact the tragedy has had on the community, the Grand Junction Police Department issued a statement urging all road users—including drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians—to obey traffic laws and remain vigilant to help prevent future tragedies on local roadways.
