GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A mountain biker was airlifted to a local hospital Thursday afternoon after suffering a suspected broken ankle on the Second Thoughts Trail in Bangs Canyon.

The Grand Junction Fire Department was dispatched to the incident at approximately 4:45 p.m. Prior to their arrival, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center secured the rider’s coordinates, activated Mesa County Search and Rescue, and requested air support from CareFlight.

Due to the remote location and rugged terrain, first responders launched the department’s drone from the trailhead. The drone successfully located the patient and helped crews map the most efficient access route. Firefighters reached the biker, provided initial medical care, and established a nearby helicopter landing zone.

The patient was safely transferred to CareFlight for air medical transport. Rescue personnel also ensured the rider’s bicycle and vehicle keys were returned to family members waiting at the trailhead.

Summer Trail Safety Reminders

With temperatures rising, the Grand Junction Fire Department encourages all hikers and mountain bikers to take extra precautions in the backcountry:

  • Carry plenty of water and start activities early in the day to avoid peak afternoon heat.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment, including helmets for cyclists.
  • Let someone know your planned route and estimated time of return.
  • Carry a fully charged cell phone or communication device.
  • Know your physical limits and be prepared for rapidly changing trail and weather conditions.
  • Consider using location-sharing features or trail apps to assist rescuers during an emergency.
