A noticeable amount of smoke was reported about 4:15 p.m. after multiple callers reported smoke and haze in the Colorado National Monument area. Lower Valley Fire and monument-area fire resources, and Grand Junction Fire Department, were dispatched to check locations including Little Salt Wash and 20 Road (Fruita), Connected Lakes (GJ), Wedding Canyon and the monument’s west entrance.
Crews reported a slight haze in downtown Grand Junction and smoke near Broadway and Ridges and west of the Safeway on Broadway.
Crews also described diffused smoke throughout Wedding Canyon and the west entrance valley but were not able to locate a specific source or any visible flames; units were continuing to patrol the area.
Radio traffic indicates no active fires anywhere. A county station chief suggested smoke could have been from an earlier agricultural burn.
