GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Two adults and 11 juveniles were arrested Wednesday afternoon after a large group riding illegal mini electric motorcycles ran a red light, nearly caused a crash, and attempted to flee from police.
On August 5, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Grand Junction Police Department received multiple calls reporting a large group of juveniles riding non-street-legal mini e-motorcycles on the roadway. The group failed to stop for a red light at North 12th Street and Elm Avenue, nearly causing a collision.
Officers initially could not locate the riders, but thanks to community tips, the group was found at the Rood Avenue parking garage downtown. Several members attempted to flee from officers at high speeds, and one rider attempted to escape by riding their illegal motorcycle down a parking garage stairwell. Officers were ultimately able to safely take all involved individuals into custody.
Authorities emphasized the danger of this activity, noting that mini e-motorcycles and off-road motorcycles are illegal on public roadways within city limits and should only be operated on private property. The department warned that such reckless behavior will not be tolerated and that both juveniles and their parents can face criminal charges.
Two adults were charged in connection with the incident:
- Kevin Espinoza, 23, was arrested and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. He was booked on charges of Second-Degree Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (11 counts), Obstructing a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, Driving Under Restraint, and No Insurance in Possession.
- Cody Nation, 22, was arrested and released on a summons for Reckless Driving and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (11 counts).
Additionally, 11 juveniles, ranging in age from 11 to 16, were arrested for Reckless Driving before being released to a parent or guardian.
