GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Five people were found dead Sunday morning after a vehicle veered off the roadway and plunged down a steep cliff near Lookout Lane.
On Sunday, August 9, at approximately 7:45 a.m., first responders with the Grand Junction Police Department and Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the 2000 block of Lookout Lane after 911 dispatchers received reports of a vehicle driving over the edge of a cliff.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a crashed vehicle resting on the hillside. Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Lookout Lane when it left the roadway and traveled down the steep incline. All five occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene, with injuries suspected to have been sustained in the crash.
Personnel from the Grand Junction Fire Department, Mesa County Search and Rescue, Grand Junction Police Department, and the Mesa County Coroner’s Office worked collaboratively to recover the individuals from the crash site. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased once appropriate family notifications have been made.
The Grand Junction Police Department continues to investigate the crash, and speed is currently being examined as a potential factor.
