MESA COUNTY, CO — A Colorado State Patrol trooper was hospitalized with serious injuries Wednesday morning after suffering a suspected medical episode that led to a rollover crash on 32 Road.
On Wednesday, August 19, at approximately 11:21 a.m., a trooper with the Vehicular Crimes Unit (VCU) was traveling northbound on 32 Road. According to investigators, the trooper experienced a suspected medical event, causing the patrol vehicle to rear-end a vehicle traveling directly in front of it in the same lane.
The patrol vehicle continued northbound, crossed the roadway, and traveled off the left-hand side of the road. It then struck the edge of a culvert, causing the cruiser to roll over and come to a rest on its roof.
The trooper was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries. Officials state that the trooper remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.
The occupants of the rear-ended vehicle reported no injuries in the collision.
The crash remains under active investigation, which is being led by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit.
