MESA COUNTY, CO — Effective Friday, September 18, 2026, at 12:01 a.m., all fire restrictions on private lands within Mesa County will be officially lifted.
The Mesa County Sheriff, in coordination with local fire chiefs, made the decision to rescind the restrictions following a change in season and recent monsoonal rains that have improved local fire conditions.
While weather patterns have improved enough to lift formal restrictions on private property, authorities caution that Mesa County is still experiencing severe and extreme drought conditions. Residents planning to recreate on public lands are urged to check the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service websites, as fire restrictions may still remain in effect in those areas.
Fire managers will continue to monitor weather and fuel conditions for the duration of the fire season and may reinstate restrictions if the danger increases. In the meantime, officials emphasize that residents must continue to practice basic fire safety to prevent human-caused wildfires.
Fire Prevention Reminders
- Campfires: Never leave a fire unattended. Ensure all fire pits and campfires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving the area.
- Towing: When pulling a trailer, ensure safety chains and other metal parts are not dragging on the pavement, which can quickly create sparks.
- Target Shooting: Use approved targets with a non-flammable backstop when shooting on public lands. Avoid shooting during hot, dry, or windy conditions.
- Smoking: Properly dispose of all cigarettes and smoking products.
- Trash: Burning trash is never permitted.
