GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 37-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed 18-year-old Grand Junction resident Serenity Murphy.
Grand Junction Police Department officers took William Harrison, 37, into custody without incident on October 1 after investigators obtained an arrest warrant. He faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
The crash occurred shortly before midnight on September 13 near Westland Avenue and D Road. Officers received a report at approximately 12:10 a.m. on September 14 and arrived to find an unconscious woman lying on the sidewalk, with a scooter in the bicycle lane near the curb.
The Grand Junction Fire Department transported her to a hospital, where she died that evening. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Serenity Murphy and confirmed that an autopsy determined injuries sustained in the incident caused her death.
According to police, investigators determined Murphy had been riding a scooter in the bike lane shortly before the crash. Although no witnesses to the collision were identified, investigators developed a lead on a suspect vehicle.
Investigators located the vehicle and observed damage consistent with the crash. They continued collecting evidence, ultimately establishing probable cause to charge Harrison.

Harrison was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility, where he was booked on the following charges:
- Vehicular Homicide — Reckless Driving Resulting in Death (Felony 4)
- Vehicular Homicide — Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Resulting in Death (Felony 3)
- Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Misdemeanor)
- Failure to Remain at the Scene, Give Information and/or Render Aid After a Crash Involving Death (Felony 3)
- Failure to Notify Police of an Accident (Misdemeanor 2)
- Failure to Provide Information After an Accident Involving Death (Traffic Misdemeanor 2)
Police thanked the community members who reported the incident and reminded drivers involved in crashes to remain at the scene and provide medical aid until first responders arrive.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to contact the Grand Junction Police Department at 970-242-6707 and reference case number 26-55655.
