MESA COUNTY, CO — A semi lost a large transformer on Interstate 70 west of De Beque Saturday afternoon, prompting an extended closure of the eastbound lanes. No injuries were reported.
On November 7, at approximately 2:40 p.m., Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to a reported semi crash near milepost 57.
According to the initial investigation, the semi was traveling eastbound through a curve when its load shifted. The movement caused a tie-down chain to break, allowing the transformer to fall from the truck.
The transformer began leaking fuel and briefly caught fire before the flames were extinguished.
Authorities reported that eastbound I-70 was closed for an extended period while crews worked to clear the roadway. Drivers are encouraged to check COTrip.org for the latest closure information.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the incident.
