GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — On June 16, 2025, a fire broke out at Las Colonias Park around 9:00 p.m., prompting a response from the Grand Junction Police Department and Fire Department. The blaze, which burned approximately one acre, was sparked by a man lighting fireworks in an area of dry grass. Fire crews successfully contained and extinguished the fire, with no injuries reported.

Following an investigation, authorities identified the suspect as 44-year-old Kristofer Mills. He was arrested on July 2 near the Botanical Gardens and released on a summons for charges including fourth-degree arson, reckless endangerment, fireworks violation, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident comes as Mesa County is under Stage One fire restrictions due to dangerously dry conditions. These restrictions prohibit personal use of fireworks, open fires outside designated areas, and other activities that could ignite wildfires. The Grand Junction Police and Fire Departments urge the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing that even a small spark can lead to a devastating wildfire. The community is encouraged to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents this summer.
