Mesa County is calling on residents to help protect local agriculture and the economy by reporting sightings of adult Japanese beetles, an invasive species that poses a significant threat to plants and fruit crops. As these beetles emerge from pupation between late June and October, proactive action is crucial to prevent reproduction and further infestation.
Japanese beetles are identifiable by their oval, flattened bodies (โ to ยฝ inch long), metallic green thoraxes, copper-brown wing covers, and white hairy tufts along their abdomens. They are known to feed on over 300 plant species, including roses, peaches, apples, grapes, and various garden plants.
Residents are encouraged to collect adult beetles by brushing them into a clear, hard-sided container, freezing them to exterminate them, and delivering them to the Colorado State University Extension Office at 2775 US-50. Key details to provide include the capture location, environment, date, time, and personal contact information. For inquiries, contact the office at 970-244-1834.
Additionally, homeowners can assist in monitoring efforts by consenting to have traps placed on their properties through the Noxious Weed and Pest Management department at weed.pest@mesacounty.us.ย
Community cooperation is vital in defending Mesa County from the damaging effects of this invasive species.
