From the Mesa County Public Health Office:

Open burn season is now underway and approved permit holders are cleared to burn. Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) lifted the No Burn Advisory on Friday, September 12. This follows the lifted fire restrictions by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

The fall open burn season runs until September 30 for the City of Grand Junction, and until October 31 for Mesa County.

Monitor conditions

MCPH continues to monitor weather conditions and air quality daily. Our team may issue a No Burn Advisory if there are strong winds, extreme dry conditions, or if air quality is poor. It is the burn permit holder’s responsibility to make sure conditions are safe to burn before ignition. Burn permits are not valid if there is a red flag warning, fire restriction, or a no burn advisory in place. Air quality information can be found on our website. The Air Quality page on our website provides easy access to real-time conditions and advisories.

Burn permit applications

The easiest way to obtain a permit is through Mesa County Public Health’s online system. The permit will be emailed to you right after check out. If you need assistance navigating the online portal, call our team at 970-248-6900. You can also apply in person at the Health and Human Services Building at 510 29 ½ Road. Burn permits are valid only during designated burn seasons. If you have questions, call MCPH at 970-248-6900 or visit our Burn Permits webpage

Alternatives to burning

Open burning pollutes the air and poses a fire hazard. Mesa County Public Health encourages alternatives, such as composting or wood chipping, if possible. The Mesa County Organic Materials Composting Facility at Mesa County Solid Waste accepts organic materials like leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs, hay, and straw. They are located at 3071 U.S. Hwy 50.
