The Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) proudly announces a series of promotions and awards recognizing the dedication, bravery, and service of its members and community partners.

Promotions:
GJFD is pleased to promote Nicholas Evenson, Mitchell Hiler, Timothy Johnston, Hayden Marlowe, Makayla Mills, Lanie Osborne, Tanner Patrick, and Matthew White to the rank of Firefighter Paramedic. These individuals exemplify the department’s mission of “Taking Care of People & Property” and uphold the core values of Dedication, Integrity, and Professionalism.

Bar of Valor:
The department recognized Firefighter Tanner Geiger, Firefighter Kaison Voegeli, Firefighter Cory Massey, Firefighter Paramedic Mitchell Schurman, Engineer Tom Giuliano, SAM Officer Zach Leyda, and Captain Erik Nordine with the Bar of Valor, the department’s highest honor for acts of exceptional bravery. On April 16, 2025, the team conducted a rapid, coordinated rescue during a house fire on Gunnison Avenue, rescuing two victims in extreme conditions.

Chief’s Commendations:

  • Firefighter/Paramedic Sean Berkson, Firefighter Kyle Dickson, Firefighter Isaac Duran, Firefighter Paramedic Ashley Frye, Firefighter Cory Massey, and Captain Kurt Winger were recognized for constructing a wheelchair-accessible ramp at a patient’s residence, enhancing safety and independence.
  • Firefighter David Byers, Firefighter Derek Gruendler, and Firefighter Paramedic Lanie Osborne were awarded for their work transitioning the department’s weekly EMS supply ordering and tracking process to Check-It, improving efficiency, accountability, and resource management.

Citizen Award:
Former City employee Cecilio Zarate received the GJFD Citizen Award for his quick actions on May 9, 2025, applying a tourniquet during a serious motorcycle crash and controlling life-threatening bleeding until first responders arrived, likely saving a life.
