GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new four-legged partner to its public safety efforts inside the Mesa County Detention Facility.

K9 Oso, a drug-detection canine, has been assigned to the detention facility to help identify illicit drugs and other contraband that may be brought into the jail. Oso will focus on the booking area and will also be deployed throughout the facility as needed to search for prohibited substances.

After an extensive selection process, Deputy William Correll was chosen to serve as K9 Oso’s handler. This fall, Deputy Correll completed numerous certification courses designed to ensure he and Oso meet and exceed proficiency standards for working as a K9 team in a detention environment.

“As individuals find new ways to introduce contraband into the Mesa County Detention Facility, we find new ways to combat it,” said Mesa County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Byrne. “We are excited to see how this new program improves safety inside the Detention Facility for staff, inmates, and visitors.”

The Sheriff’s Office says the addition of K9 Oso is part of ongoing efforts to keep drugs and other illegal items out of the jail, enhance safety, and support a more secure environment for everyone inside the facility.

The agency extended its congratulations to Deputy Correll and a warm welcome to K9 Oso, noting they are eager to see the new K9 team in action.
