DUI Suspect Arrested After Fleeing Police

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 32-year-old man was arrested Sunday evening for suspected drunk driving after fleeing from police at high speeds and swerving into oncoming traffic.

On May 17, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Grand Junction Police Department officers responded to a report of a suspected intoxicated driver in the 2400 block of Orchard Avenue. Officers located the suspect vehicle in an alleyway and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

According to investigators, the vehicle failed to yield and fled at a high rate of speed, swerving and traveling into opposing lanes of traffic. The driver eventually stopped in the 1700 block of North 17th Street, where officers took him into custody. During the investigation, officers discovered multiple bottles of alcohol inside the vehicle.

The suspect, identified as Jesus Portillo, 32, was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility and booked on the following charges:

  • DUI – Drove Vehicle Under the Influence
  • Vehicular Eluding
  • Speeding 20-24 MPH Over Limit
  • Obstructing a Peace Officer
  • Reckless Endangerment
