A two-vehicle, head-on crash was reported around 11:40 a.m. on Interstate 70 westbound between mile markers 4 and 5. Lower Valley fire and rescue units, ambulance crews and law enforcement — including Colorado State Patrol — responded with lights and sirens.
Radio traffic described a gray Subaru and an unknown-color truck or hatchback; one vehicle had rolled onto its roof and the Subaru was reported on fire with visible flames. Bystanders observed 5-year-old boy with blood on his face. Possible entrapment and additional injuries were reported but not confirmed. One female occupant is confirmed pinned inside a vehicle. Traffic backup was reported in the westbound lanes in the area. CareFlight is dispatched and mutual aid from Grand Junction was requested.
Crash possibly involved a wrong-way driver on the interstate that was reported minutes before the incident.
Update 11:55 a.m.: Responders on scene are reporting 2 one possible fatalities with 5 patients requiring medical attention. Crews are extinguishing a vehicle on fire with a brush truck. Additional resources are being dispatched from Grand Junction to assist. State Patrol is also on scene.
Update 12:30 p.m.: Radio traffic from State Patrol suggests two children were transported to a local hospital, both conscious and breathing. Additional patients were also transported by ambulance.
