MESA COUNTY, CO — A wider railroad crossing and new sidewalk space are officially coming to 32 1/2 Road in Clifton following a newly approved agreement between Mesa County and Union Pacific Railroad.
On Tuesday, July 21, the Board of Mesa County Commissioners approved an agreement outlining the responsibilities and safety requirements for upcoming work within the railroad right-of-way. These crossing upgrades are a key component of the broader 32 1/2 Road Phase 2 corridor project, which is currently out for bid.
Union Pacific estimates its portion of the work will cost $331,552. In addition, Mesa County will also pay $5,000 to expand the crossing area to accommodate the new sidewalk construction.
The total estimated cost to the county is $336,522, though officials note this excludes railroad flagging and other protective services, meaning actual final costs may vary.
Construction on the 32 1/2 Road Phase 2 corridor project is anticipated to begin this fall, with the railroad crossing work slated for completion alongside the rest of the corridor improvements.
