GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 41-year-old Grand Junction man was arrested Friday night after allegedly damaging vehicles with a baseball bat, chasing people in the neighborhood, and engaging in a four-hour standoff with SWAT teams.
On Friday, August 14, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Grand Junction Police Department officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of Elm Drive for a report of vandalism in progress. The initial 911 caller stated a man in the area was using a baseball bat to damage vehicles. Shortly after, additional callers reported that the same suspect was yelling at people and chasing them with the bat before entering a nearby residence.
When officers arrived to investigate, the suspect refused to exit the home and began shouting threats at law enforcement. Due to the severity of the allegations and the suspect’s behavior, officers secured the area and activated SWAT operators from both the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
The Grand Junction Fire Department staged nearby to address any potential medical emergencies, and neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution. During the standoff, an adult female inside the residence was able to exit safely and was unharmed.
Authorities obtained an arrest warrant and successfully took the barricaded suspect into custody at approximately 9:30 p.m.
After being medically evaluated, the suspect, identified as Nicholas Houk, 41, of Grand Junction, was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. He was booked on the following charges:
- First-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer
- Attempted First-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer
- Felony Menacing (2 Counts)
- First-Degree Trespass of an Inhabited Dwelling
- Third-Degree Assault (2 Counts)
- Criminal Mischief
- Obstructing a Peace Officer
- Resisting Arrest
- Refusal to Leave Premises
The Grand Junction Police Department noted that the investigation remains ongoing and expressed gratitude for the assistance of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Junction Fire Department.
