GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 25-year-old man was arrested Monday evening on vehicular assault and DUI charges after losing control of his vehicle and striking a teenager on a minibike near Grand Junction.
On Monday, August 24, at approximately 7:00 p.m., authorities responded to a severe collision near the intersection of 26 7/8 Road and Legacy Way.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of a Jeep Wrangler, identified as Kolby Jones, 25, was traveling northbound on 26 7/8 Road when he lost control of the vehicle. The Jeep was reportedly fishtailing before over-rotating and sliding sideways across the roadway, leaving skid marks from all four tires. The front of the Jeep then collided with a Coleman minibike.
The impact caused the teenage driver of the minibike to be thrown onto the hood of the Jeep before coming to a rest off the west side of the roadway. The teenager was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Jones and his 27-year-old passenger reported no injuries in the crash.
Following the investigation, Jones was arrested and faces the following charges:
- Vehicular Assault – DUI
- Vehicular Assault – Reckless
- Driving Under the Influence (With 1 Prior Alcohol Offense)
- Driving Under Restraint (Alcohol-Related)
- Reckless Driving
- Failure to Display Proof of Insurance
State Patrol advised that the crash investigation is ongoing.
A GoFundMe campaign created to assist the victim’s family has identified the teenager as Amory. According to the fundraiser, Amory suffered catastrophic injuries—including severe internal trauma, a broken pelvis, and spinal injuries—requiring multiple emergency surgeries.
Due to the severity of his condition, he was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver for specialized care. As of Tuesday, he remains stable but is intubated and heavily sedated. His family is currently seeking donations to help cover extensive medical bills, travel, and lodging expenses during his long road to recovery.
