GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 14-year-old Grand Junction High School student was arrested Monday following an investigation into a viral social media post intended to cause fear and alarm at local schools.
On Friday, August 28, the Grand Junction Police Department became aware of a social media post referencing the recent TikTok “Cat in the Hat” trend. The post indicated that an individual might appear at West Middle School and at random residences to cause alarm.
Out of an abundance of caution, the GJPD increased its presence at West Middle School and Grand Junction High School on Friday. Following an investigation conducted alongside Mesa County Valley School District 51 Safety and Security personnel, authorities determined there was no credible threat to students, staff, or the community.
On Monday, August 31, police identified the suspect as a 14-year-old Grand Junction High School student. The juvenile was taken into custody, charged, and subsequently released to his parents. Due to Colorado Open Records Act laws, the juvenile’s identity will not be released.
The juvenile was charged with the following:
- Interference with Staff, Faculty, or Students of Educational Institutions
- Harassment
Authorities urge students and community members to continue reporting any suspicious activity or concerning statements to law enforcement or school personnel.
