MESA COUNTY, CO — The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office reported a series of arrests over the past week, responding to incidents ranging from package theft and weapons violations to severe domestic violence assaults that left multiple victims hospitalized.
Below is a recap of the notable arrests made between September 3 and September 8:
Clifton Traffic Stop Leads to Weapons Arrest
On Thursday, September 3, just after 2:00 p.m., patrol deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 400 block of 32 Road in Clifton. During the stop, deputies identified a passenger, Kendale Bryant-Townsell, 31, of Clifton, who had an active arrest warrant.
Bryant-Townsell exhibited signs of intoxication and was found to have a handgun in his possession. The driver of the vehicle was issued a traffic citation and released, while Bryant-Townsell was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility. He was released on a personal recognizance bond the following day. He was charged with:
- Prohibitive Use of a Weapon (Misdemeanor 1)
- Failure to Appear Warrant
Serial Offender Arrested for Package Theft and Jail Contraband
On Friday, September 4, at approximately 2:20 p.m., deputies responded to a theft in progress in the 3100 block of Glendam Road in Grand Junction. Deputies located the suspect, Kyler Rentie, in possession of Amazon packages and Walmart delivery bags labeled with nearby addresses.
Rentie was arrested and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. Upon entering the jail, deputies located suspected methamphetamine concealed on his person.
Authorities noted that Rentie has been booked into the facility no fewer than six times in 2026. JunctionNow jail records show no fewer than 8 bookings since June 2025.
He was released on a personal recognizance bond on September 5 after being charged with:
- Second-Degree Introducing Contraband (Felony 6)
- Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (<4g Schedule I/II) (Misdemeanor 1)
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Drug Petty Offense)
- Theft – Less than $300 (Petty Offense)
Alamo Street Domestic Assault Leaves Victim Hospitalized
On Sunday, September 6, just after 2:00 p.m., deputies were dispatched to an assault in progress in the 400 block of Alamo Street in Grand Junction. Upon arrival, they located an adult female bleeding significantly from injuries to her upper body. She was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
Following an on-scene investigation, deputies arrested Craig Purtell, 30, of Grand Junction. He was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges:
- Second-Degree Assault with Injury – Deadly Weapon (Felony 4)
- Second-Degree Criminal Tampering (Misdemeanor 2)
- Child Abuse – Negligently Cause Bodily Injury (Misdemeanor 2)
- Domestic Violence
Warrant Arrest Following Sunday Night Strangulation and Assault
Later on Sunday, September 6, at approximately 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to another assault in progress in the 200 block of 29 Road in Grand Junction. The suspect had fled the area before deputies arrived. At least one victim from this incident was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.
After investigating, authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Michael Snyder, 40, of Grand Junction. Snyder was located and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on Tuesday, September 8, where he remains in custody without bond pending a court appearance. He faces the following charges:
- Second-Degree Assault – Strangulation (Felony 4)
- Menacing (Felony 5)
- Third-Degree Assault (Two Counts, Misdemeanor 1)
- Harassment (Misdemeanor 1)
- Child Abuse (Misdemeanor 2)
- Domestic Violence
