Police are urging the community to lock up their bikes.

From the Grand Junction Police Department:

The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) has reported a recent rise in bike thefts across the city, coinciding with the start of the fall semester at Colorado Mesa University. This uptick in thefts has particularly affected the campus and its surrounding areas, with the total loss estimated at over $30,000. Between August 1, 2024, and September 5, 2024, the GJPD received reports of 49 stolen bikes, a significant increase compared to the 28 thefts reported during the same period in 2023.

Bike thefts are often crimes of opportunity, occurring when bikes are left unsecured or in vulnerable locations. Thieves tend to target easily accessible bikes, taking advantage of quick chances to steal without much planning.

Here are some effective tips to prevent bike theft:

  • Use a high-quality lock such as a U-lock or heavy-duty chain. Avoid cable locks as they are easy to cut.
  • Lock the frame to a solid, immoveable object. Do not lock the wheels to the object as wheels can be removed.
  • Personalize the bike. Adding stickers or identifying items help make the bike easily recognizable and can deter thieves.
  • Do not leave bikes out overnight. If possible, bring bikes inside or use a secure, indoor bike storage.
  • Choose a good location. Store bikes in high-visibility, well-lit areas. Avoid isolated areas, even if they seem more convenient.
  • Take photos of your bike and have the serial number recorded.

The GJPD offers free bike registrations. This information is kept on file with the department so when a stolen bike is recovered, the bike is returned as efficiently as possible. There are forms available at the Police Department, located at 555 Ute Avenue.

The GJPD encourages anyone who has had their bike stolen or who witnesses suspicious behavior to report it immediately.
