The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) released its 2024 Annual Report, showcasing a year of significant growth and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of the community. With a sharp increase in calls for service and a targeted focus on combating retail theft and other crimes, the department has expanded both its personnel and support divisions to better serve the city.

In his message, Chief Matt Smith underscored the department’s dedication to addressing the “little things” that drive meaningful change. He highlighted the hiring of over 20 new officers and the expansion of key units like the Municipal Park Rangers and Co-Responder Unit. Looking to the future, the GJPD plans to launch a new Animal Control Unit and bolster the Traffic Unit with additional officers in 2025.

The department responded to 67,710 calls for service in 2024, marking an increase of over 5,000 from the previous year. Crime statistics included 6 homicides, 336 burglaries, and 51 robberies, among other offenses.

Since its founding in 1892 with a single town marshal, the GJPD has grown to a force of over 130 sworn officers. The department has continually evolved to meet community needs, from appointing its first motorcycle officer in 1930 to establishing the Traffic Unit in 1998.

The Western Colorado Drug Task Force, a joint effort with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, earned the prestigious Task Force of the Year award in 2024 for its outstanding narcotics enforcement. Additionally, the GJPD’s social media efforts were nationally recognized, securing a spot as one of five finalists for Best Facebook Presence by a Government Agency.

As the GJPD looks ahead to 2025, it remains committed to enhancing community safety and quality of life through innovative policing and strong partnerships.
