GRAND JUNCTION, CO — A 42-year-old man was safely taken into custody following a standoff with SWAT teams on Saturday after he barricaded himself inside a mobile home, threatened to shoot at law enforcement, and attempted to start a fire.
On August 1, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department were conducting a follow-up investigation in the 500 block of 25 1/2 Road at the Paradise Valley Mobile Home Park when the suspect barricaded himself inside a residence and refused to cooperate.
During the standoff, the suspect reportedly sent another individual a photograph of himself holding a firearm, as well as a picture of a fire he had ignited on top of a stove. Investigators stated the man also threatened to burn the home down and shoot at responding officers.
SWAT teams from the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were activated and responded to the scene. The Grand Junction Fire Department staged nearby to address any potential medical or fire suppression needs, and neighboring residents were safely evacuated as a precaution.
As SWAT operators worked to gain compliance, the suspect, identified as Samuel Hinkson, 42, exited the home and was taken into custody without incident. Authorities reported no injuries during the operation.
Hinkson was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility, where he was booked on the following charges:
- Attempted First-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer (9 Counts)
- Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender
- Menacing – Real/Simulated Weapon
- Fourth-Degree Arson
- Prohibited Use of a Weapon
- Harassment – Repeat Telephone Calls
- Obstruction of a Peace Officer
- Resisting Arrest
- Failure/Refusal to Leave Premises/Property Upon Request of a Peace Officer
- Domestic Violence
